The award winning book, Number The Stars, is a story anyone can enjoy. It is an informing novel based around the Holocaust. Although the characters themselves are fictional the author, Lois Lowery states that she was inspired by different true stories. Annemarie Johansen is the main character. She lives in Germany with her family and friends. When the Holocaust breaks out she learns to blend in with the crowd and not draw attention to herself. Later she realizes that her best friend Ellen isn’t safe, since she is Jewish. One night Ellen was over and something out of the ordinary happened. Nazi soldiers were patrolling the area and going door to door searching for any Jews that they could get there hands on. Annemarie and her parents are scurrying to protect Ellen. Annemarie is forced to pull of Ellen’s Necklace of the star of David. Annemarie proves time and time again that she will do whatever it takes to protect Ellen. Throughout the story Annemarie grows her character and becomes braver. She learns the true meaning of friendship and how to stand up for herself.
