Beginning on Thursday, August 25, McKinney Christian Academy hosted the 13th Annual Tournament of Champions volleyball competition, held in the Student Life Center. Sixteen teams competed for the title. The Lady Mustangs volleyball team got off to a strong start going 3-0 on the first day with wins over Frisco Legacy, Westlake Academy and Heritage Christian. The Mustangs were then granted the first seed in the gold bracket. In bracket play, the Mustangs started strong, beating Abilene Christian in three sets. After winning, the Mustangs faced off Dallas Christian in the semi-finals. Senior and defensive specialist Daniela Morales said, “I was motivated to win since they are our district rivals, and I knew that we all had to be focused and we needed to have energy to win.” The Chargers were one point away from heading to the championship when the ladies battled back in the 2nd set, forcing a 3rd set. The Mustangs were victorious and went on to the championship game against Parish Episcopal. Parish finished undefeated in the tournament and ended up winning the title. Sophomore Adi Vanover says, “Overall we pushed through adversity as a team. We all did our part and the future is bright for the rest of the season.” The Lady Mustangs finished as the runner-up in the gold bracket. Their next game will be against district rival Brook Hill on Tuesday, September 6.
