On Wednesday, September 9, the McKinney Christian Academy staff and students gathered around the cross for chapel. Chapel began with Bible teacher and Army veteran Dr. John McGinn leading the study body in prayer. The student worship band led So Will I by Hillsong United, followed by a silent prayer. Chris Hydock, Director of Spiritual Formation, then closed out with prayer. He encouraged the students to walk around the cross, reading the signs posted that detailed the events of 9/11. Students silently moved inside the Student Life Center to hear Upper School English teacher Timothy Clark, a Marine veteran, recall the events of that day. He said, “I remember the day being on active duty and the military, the way we react, how quickly we go into a higher DEF CON and secure the base. I remember the body count coming in, just increasing and increasing, just how sad it was.” When asked how he thinks things would be different if it weren’t for 9/11, he replied, “I definitely don’t think we would have had as many wars, which ultimately means we would not have lost service members. I think we would have less restrictions on airfare or flights… but I think it’s hard to imagine what life would be like without it.” The staff and students reflected on the 23rd anniversary of the day that completely transformed our country and how it will never be the same again. The lives lost and the ones who selflessly sacrificed their lives for the good of others will never be forgotten.
