On September 17, the Mustang Football team faced off against Houston Cypress Christian. On the first play of the game, senior Cody Dow went down with a shoulder injury on a quarterback run up the middle. The backup quarterback, sophomore Marshall Yoo, started off slow by throwing an interception on his first passing attempt of the game. In the first quarter, junior Chase Bruegel caught a touchdown pass to put the Mustangs up by one score, but Cypress quickly responded with two touchdowns of their own. In the second quarter, the Mustangs couldn’t get anything going offensively, while Cypress added two more touchdowns to make the score 28-7. In the third quarter, Yoo connected with junior Angel Lopez for the Mustangs’ second touchdown of the game. The Mustang defense came up with some crucial stops, preventing Cypress from scoring during the quarter. However, in the fourth quarter, Cypress found the end zone once more. Shortly after, the Mustangs responded one final time, with Lopez connecting with Bruegel for another touchdown, ending the game with a final score of 35-21. Junior, Harry Thompson, said this about the game, “The game would have been night and day difference if we had our star player Cody Dow; losing him was like losing our spark as a team.”
The Mustangs play next on Friday, October 24th, against Tyler All Saints.
