On Tuesday, February 18th the McKinney Christian boys basketball team competed in their first ever home playoff game hosting the St. Michael’s Crusaders of Austin. St. Michaels got off to a fast start in the first quarter and were able to maintain a 14 point, 35-21 lead at halftime. The Mustangs were able to come back strong and cut the lead to just four points halfway through the third quarter thanks to a 9-0 run to start the second half. The game slipped away from the Mustangs in the fourth and the final score ended as a 63-50 Mustang loss. When asked about how it felt to end his Mustang career with this historic season senior Luke Gerdes stated, “Overall it was a great season and my favorite one since so many memories were made these last six months with this team and we were finally able to hang up a banner for basketball.” This playoff game was also coach Cary Bartoo’s farewell after 13 years of coaching for the Mustangs, but he was able to finish strong with his first and the school’s only basketball district championship. High expectations were set for the new coach, James Wheeler, coming into next year with a district championship and four returning starters.
