On Monday, February 2, the McKinney Christian Academy boys’ soccer team faced off against the top-ranked team in their district, the Dallas Covenant Knights. This was the Mustangs’ second matchup against the Knights, and they were looking to come away with a win. The game kicked off and immediately became heated, going back and forth with many shots from both teams. However, neither team was able to finish, and the score remained tied 0–0 at halftime. After the break, the game continued with the same intensity. The matchup was very physical, with many fouls from both sides, and once again no team could find the back of the net. Regulation ended tied 0–0, sending the game into a 20-minute overtime, with each team playing 10 minutes on both sides of the field. During the first 10 minutes, the Mustangs shut down every attempt from the Knights, while their own chances were also stopped. After a short break, the Mustangs switched sides and went back to work, stopping the Knights over and over again. With just two minutes left in overtime, a foul just outside the box gave senior, Grady Rodgers, a chance to end the game. He delivered with a beautiful shot into the top corner, giving the Mustangs the overtime win in a decisive matchup for first place in the district. Junior, Luke Dreffs, said this about the game, “Even though I wasn’t able to play and I knew my team needed me, I still cheered from the sideline as if I was playing.”
The Mustan.gs play next on Thursday, February 5, away against Lakehill.
