Welcoming New Staff to MCA

MCA starts the year off with new teachers.

  • Angela Williams was born in Memphis, TN. Before becoming a third grade teacher at MCA, she taught at McKinney ISD for 22 years. Some of Williams favorite hobbies are playing volleyball, watching her daughter, Bren, play volleyball, hanging out with her two daughters, and watching all MCA sporting events. “I am so excited to be teaching at MCA! It really is my dream job!” she said.

  • Terri Weichel taught at Lucas ISD before coming to MCA. Weichel graduated from the University of North Texas and is now the lower school Directed Studies teacher.

  • Laura Wurst was born in Dallas, Texas. Before becoming a third grade teacher at MCA, Wurst taught all throughout Florida and Texas for 10 years. In her freetime, she enjoys spending time with her family, and watching sporting events.

  • Ashley Thigpen was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Before becoming the Middle School art teacher, Thigpen worked at Prosper ISD. In her freetime, she likes to attend yoga, cook, and watch her kids play in their after school events.

  • Jennifer Thomas was born in Michigan. Before becoming the assistant Middle School principal, Thomas taught Kinder and 1st grade for 10 years. Some of her favorite hobbies are watching her kids play sports, traveling, spending time with her family at the beach, and eating at cafes with friends.

  • Shelby Truesdale was born in New Mexico. Truesdale taught at Dowell Middle School before becoming the Lower School PE, and Lil Stangs/Mustang Athletic Club Coordinator. Truesdale is also the Middle School D2/D3 Volleyball Coach. For fun, she likes playing with her kids, volleyball, and anything outside.

  • Kara Vita was born in Dallas, TX. Vita just recently graduated from the University of Arkansas this past May. She is now a first grade teacher’s assistant. Some of Vitas’ favoite hobbies are running, reading, and hanging out with her niece and nephew. A fun fact about her is that she loves Johnny Cash.

  • Kaci Nunez was born in Odessa, Texas. Nunez was hired as the Lower School Receptionist. Outside of working, she likes to do anything outdoors, adventuring, and hanging out her family.

  • Michelle Harmon was born in Liberty, Texas. Before becoming a fifth grade teacher at MCA, Harmon came from Cornerstone Christian Academy. In her freetime, Harmon loves to read, sew, emborder, and swim. She also has three kids that go to MCA as well.

  • Nicole Hall was born in El Paso, TX. Hall worked at Prestonwood Christian Academy before becoming the MCA all school nurse. In her freetime, she likes reading, sports, being outdoors, and going on vacation.

  • Jen Guglielmino was born in New Jersey. Before becoming the Middle School directed studies teacher, she spent 20 years working in public special education. Guglielmino loves running, surfing, being with her family, and traveling.

  • Brent Bevelhymer was born in Ft Worth, TX. Before becoming the eleventh and twelfth grade Psychology teacher at MCA, he came from a private practice as a Licensed Psychotherapist. In Bevelhymers freetime, he likes spending time with his family, traveling, and working out in the gym. “I am super happy to be at MCA with such great students and staff. I am grateful to be able to share some of my experiences in the 23 years I have had with so many patients.” he said.

  • Ashley Bruegel was born in Bryan, Texas. Before becoming the Upper School art teacher, Bruegel taught at Plano ISD for 14 years. In her freetime, she loves to travel, go to the beach, and support the Horned Frogs at TCU games. Bruegel also has two boys that go to MCA, one being in seventh grade and the other in ninth.

  • Tina Cellars was born in San Angelo, TX. Cellars taught at McKinney Boyd High School for 16 years before becoming the seventh and eighth grade Technology teacher. She loves golf, boating, landscaping, and fishing. A fun fact about Cellars is that she has three children from the ages 16-25, along with a granddaughter.

  • Narci Dreffs was born in Dallas, Texas. Dreffs was hired as the Director of Communications and Marketing. Outside of school, she likes to read and be with her family.

  • Laynie Firth was born in northern Montana. Firth was hired as the Admin Assistant to the Upper School Principal, Laura Smith. In her free time, she enjoys arts and crafts, being outdoors, the beach, being with her family, baking, and thrifting. Firth also has two girls that are students at MCA.

As we meet another school year, there are lots of new things happening. This year, there are 17 new staff members at MCA. This is the most that MCA has had in over 30 years. There are 10 new Lower School teachers, three new Middle School teachers, four new Upper School teachers, and new marketing director Narci Dreffs. The new Lower School teachers include first grade teachers Laura Wurst and assistant Kara Vita, third grade Angela Williams, fourth grade Trish Cornwall, fifth grade Michelle Harmon, Directed Studies Terri Weichel, P.E. Shelby Truesdale, Art Stacia Schueler, nurse Nicole Hall, and receptionist Kaci Nunez. The new Middle School teachers include technology teacher Tina Cellars, Directed Studies Jen Gulielmino, and Art teacher Ashley Thigpen. Lastly, the new High school teachers include Art Ashley Bruegel, and Psychology teacher Brent Bevelhymer, and administrative assistant Laynie Firth.

Tatum Barnard has been attending MCA since kindergarten and is now a sophomore. This will be her second year on the newspaper staff. Barnard will be playing soccer for her school in the winter. In her freetime, she enjoys being with her friends, family, and playing competitive soccer. Her favorite part of MCA is the Christian community she is surrounded by everyday. Barnard's favorite verse is Ephesians 2:3-5.  "But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions- it is by grace you have been saved."
