On Wednesday, April 29, the McKinney Christian Academy Mustangs baseball team faced off against Willow Park Trinity Christian in an area playoff matchup. Junior Ian Mulligan took the mound for the Mustangs, and the game began as a defensive battle with both teams held scoreless through the first inning. In the second, a sacrifice throwdown to third base allowed junior Angel Rivera to score and give the Mustangs an early lead. Trinity Christian responded in the third inning with three runs to take a 3–1 advantage, and the Mustangs were held scoreless over the next two innings as momentum shifted. Facing a potential loss, the Mustangs answered in the fifth inning with a run to cut the deficit to 3–2. Mulligan then delivered three consecutive scoreless innings to keep his team within striking distance. In the top of the seventh, junior Lincoln Pogue and sophomore Cade Ballard each scored to give the Mustangs a 4–3 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, senior Ben Thomas shut the door by recording the final three outs to secure the 4–3 victory. Junior Josh Anderson said, “We really flipped the switch this game and proved we can play as a team. It was all hands on deck, and we came out with a crazy dub.”
The Mustangs will next face Colleyville Covenant in the regional playoff round, with the date and location still to be determined.
